Be straight forward. You don't have to be mean or ugly about it just honest. You might be surprised and set an example that could possibly even help them for the better. Alot of people are followers and kinda just go with the flow. Be honest, stick to your guns, and who knows something wonderful might happen and better both of your lives! Be a leader. Good luck!!!!!

A genuine friend mostly see good things in you even if youre in the lowest of your feelings. And they usualy spend most of their times lietening to you. If you sees these reactions/traits from what you call life long friend then he or she is somehow helping you molding your life for the better. That is if im getting your concern correctly.
If you mean, how to tell them that theyre hampering your ways to make yourself better, then just be yourself and confornt them with all honesty. After all, if they wont understand you, theyre not worth calling a life long friend then, and hence should be avoided.
